March 8, in Tbilisi, at the metro station Rustaveli, Georgian Trade Unions Confederation (GTUC) opened an open office where GTUC board members congratulated women on International Women’s Day and presented flowers. Along with the flowers leaflets on women’s labor rights were also handed out.
After this action, the GTUC Women’s Committee, together with the Trade Union of workers of Agricultural, Light, Food and Processing Industry of Georgia visited Agara. 180 women living there have been unemployed for six months because of the Agara Sugar Plant stopped operations. On March 9 they will be rallying demanding protection of labour rights and livelihood.
Special letters were sent to chairman of the Human Rights Committee of the Georgian Parliament Sophio Kiladze and the First Deputy Chairman of Parliament and Chair of the Gender Equality Council Tamar Chugoshvili requesting effective steps to improve women’s labour rights.
